Police Academy

Description

Be a police officer. All you do is join the farce.

The lady mayor of a large U.S. city has thrown open the doors of the Police Academy to a new generation of recruits: anybody who wants to join, without regard to height, weight, age, sex, race, religion or educational background. When you see who shows up, you'll think it's a crime.

Police Academy is a side-splitting satirical salute to the men, women and borderline cases dedicated to protecting the public from people very much like themselves. It's also the funniest, sexiest, most irreverent comedy since National Lampoon's Vacation and Airplane!

D Squad's roll call reads like a weirdos Who's Who: Moses Hightower (Bubba Smith), an ex-florist built like a brick arboretum; Larvelle Jones (Michael Winslow), master impressionist of machine guns; Jorge Martin (Andrew Rubin), a Latin lover who comes, sees, and conquers (not necessarily in that order); Laverne Hooks (Marion Ramsey), Miss Timid of 1984; and Eugene Tackleberry (David Graf), a gun buff who arrives for training loaded for bear. Instructors Harris (G.W. Bailey) and Callahan (Leslie Easterbrook) aim to wash these turkeys out — before anyone can mistake them for cops.

Director Hugh Wilson earned his comedy stripes as creator of WKRP in Cincinnati. He does a fine job keeping things out of control, while stars Steve Guttenberg and Kim Cattrall almost convince us the mayor's recruiting scheme has merits. When a real-life riot breaks out, the recruits of Police Academy graduate to the streets — and here, as in the top popular sequels they also stumbled through, even the bad guys die laughing!
